LAC - Rainbow and Sunshine
Lac is a resinous substance deposited on the twigs of various trees in southern Asia, by the female Lac Insect. It is used in the manufacture of Varnishes, Sealing wax etc. In several parts of India, this is used in the making of various kinds of decorative and utility Items.
Indian Craftsmen smoothen the article, turn it on the wheel or lathe, and smear the lac all over the article. Several layers of different colored lac are applied in this way. Followed by polish and shining with a oil rag. The layers of lac are then scraped to highlight the required color.
Zig-zag dana work, fire, cloud, etching, and painted decorative work are different varieties of lacquering. The colors used are gold, silver, red, blue, yellow, orange and black. The lacquerware itself has designs using the above colour combinations as dots, squares, and other geometric or floral motifs.
It's a veritable kaleidoscope of brightly enhanced colours, giving each handcrafted item a celebratory, festive look.
E.P.N.S - A Silvery sheen
Electro Plated Nickel Silver, E.P.N.S. is finely polished brass, plated first with Nickel and then Silver, of variant thickness, and then polished again to give a very rich look of silver. The thickness of silver may vary from less than one micron (commercial), to one micron (discerning), to several microns. Electroplating plants are used for this purpose.
E.P.N.S comes in different finishes, which include the shiny silver, dull (matt) silver and antique silver. The various items are then crafted with very fine etching and engraving bringing out beautiful and intricate designs.
The various items made in this process is vast. These include, candle stands, planters, tea sets, boxes, coasters, jugs, ashtrays, wine coolers, ice buckets, beer mugs, napkin holders, dishes, bowls, trays etc.

Wood inlay, which developed and flourished with the Mughal influence, is done with bits of ivory, plastic, horn, metal pieces or other types of wood into carved surfaces of wooden items. This is found in various parts of the country such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Mughal designs such as the fretwork, jaali or the anguri work are also very popular.
Rare woods have special uses. Ebony and rosewood are carved into trinket boxes, or inlaid with ivory. Hand fans made from thin slivers of sandalwood spread aroma in the room. Inlay can become applique work and mosaic designs built up from strips of different kinds of wood first glued together and then thinly sliced.

BRASS - The Golden éclat
Brass is any alloy of copper and zinc; the proportions of zinc and copper can be varied to create a range of brasses, each of which has unique properties. Brass is a substitutional alloy. It is used for decoration for its bright gold-like appearance; Brass has a yellow color, somewhat similar to gold. It is relatively resistant to tarnishing, and is often used as decoration and for coins. Brass has likely been known to humans since prehistoric times.
Brass has higher malleability than copper or zinc. The relatively low melting point (900–940 °C depending on composition) of brass and its flow characteristics make it a relatively easy material to cast. By varying the proportions of copper and zinc, the properties of the brass can be changed, allowing hard and soft brasses.
Today almost 90% of all brass alloys are recycled. Because most brass is nonmagnetic, it can be separated from ferrous scrap by passing the scrap near a powerful magnet. Brass scrap is collected and transported to the foundry where it is melted and recast into billets. Billets are later heated up and extruded into the right form and size.
The copper in brass makes brass germicidal, via the oligodynamic effect. For example, brass doorknobs disinfect themselves of many bacteria within eight hours [2]. This effect is important in hospitals, but useful in many contexts.
Brass has a combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and formability that will continue to make it a useful material for many applications in the foreseeable future. Brass also has an advantage over other materials in that most products made from brass are recycled or reused, rather than being discarded in a landfill, which will help ensure a continued supply for many years.
CLEANING BRASS
Tarnish on unlacquered brass can be removed with a commercial cleaner or a homemade one: Saturate a cloth or sponge with household vinegar or lemon juice, sprinkle it with salt and thoroughly rub the tarnished object. Be sure to rinse the brass extremely well and buff to a shine. Lacquered brass is easier to clean. It needs only to be wiped with a dry cloth.
